Bring $3 for parking. • Explore Panthertown Valley, often referred to as the Yosemite of the East. Located near Cashiers, it’s 6,311 acres of Nantahala National Forest land featuring 30 miles of backcountry hiking and mixed-use trails for cycling, mountain biking and horseback riding. • Visit Whitewater Falls considered to be the highest waterfall east of the Mississippi. Bring $3 for parking. • Take a dip in Lake Glenville, one of the highest lakes east of the Mississippi River, sitting 3,500 above sea level. Pines Recreation sandy beach area along Lake Glenville is great for picnicking and swimming. • Zipline, play footgolf, ski, and snowboard at Sapphire Valley. • Cast a line on the WNC Fly Fishing Trail® with expert guides. • Visit Gorges State Park, a 7,700-acre NC State Park with numerous waterfalls, rugged river gorges and great trails. • Rent a stand-up paddleboard, kayak, jet ski, or boat for adventures on Lake Glenville. Great Smoky Mountains Railroad – Just a quick 20-minute drive outside of Dillsboro, you’ll find the train depot to the beautiful Great Smoky Mountains Railroad. Take the whole family on an adventure through the mountains! Nearby excursions – Only a short distance to bike trails in Cullowhee and performances at Western Carolina University, Fly fishing in Webster, and close proximity to Cashiers’ stretch of the Nantahala National Forest, Dillsboro is a great home base for your mountain adventures.

Dillsboro Art and Craft festivals – While the area has lots of annual events, these fun local craft festivals are held monthly in June, July, and August, featuring local artisans, live music, and food vendors. One of the most unique is the Easter Hat Parade, which takes place in April. Dogwood Crafters – This popular co-op shows off work from 100 artisans in the region. It also offers Appalachian craft workshops to teach visitors a new skill or two. Appalachian Women’s Museum, located at the nearby Monteith Farmstead, preserves the stories of ordinary women leading extraordinary lives.

A number of local companies rent rafts, canoes, kayaks, and tubes in the summer months, so choose a solo or guided trip with a local rafting expert. • Visit the Mountain Heritage Center and Fine Art Museum events at Western Carolina University. Enjoy Catamount Sports including Football, Basketball, and Softball. • Take a leisurely stroll along the Tuck River Greenway, spanning a mile along the Tuckaseigee River in Cullowhee. Bardo Arts Center is home to the Western Carolina University Fine Art Museum, featuring four galleries, a growing permanent collection, and exhibitions highlighting regional, national, and international artists. Serving as the gateway to both the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway, Cherokee offers a variety of activities for visitors from history to golf to gaming. History buffs will enjoy learning about the Cherokee culture, while golfers can hit the links at Sequoyah National Golf Club and gamers can try their luck at Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort. Cherokee offers a wide variety of cultural experiences, art galleries, and outdoor adventures. Oconaluftee Indian Village – Experience this guided tour through authentic Cherokee dwellings, sacred ritual sites, and more as you are transported to the 1760s and learn about the Cherokee Nation. You’ll also learn cultural dances and watch craftspeople at work as they sculpt pottery and weave baskets. Museum of the Cherokee Indian – Get inspired by the culture and heritage of the Cherokee people at this interactive museum, which tells the story of more than 11,000 years of Cherokee history. Oconaluftee River Trail – Find rich history and fun for the whole family at this 1.5-mile trail along the scenic Oconaluftee River. Located at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park Visitors Center, you can also check out Mountain Farm Museum and over 40 species of wildflowers.

“Unto These Hills” Outdoor Drama – Since its debut on July 1, 1950, “Unto These Hills” has entertained over six million people, telling the Cherokees’ rich story from 1780 to the twenty-first century. The show portrays the unique story of the Cherokee from a historical perspective. The play traces the Cherokee people through the ages, from the zenith of their power through the heartbreak of the Trail of Tears. It ends in the present day, where the Cherokee people continue to rewrite their place in the world. Mingo Falls – A photographer’s dream, this cascade is a multitude of waterfalls pouring from smaller ledges—making for spectacular wide shots and closeups alike. While the name sounds like it may stem from Cherokee origin, the 150-foot high, near-vertical cascade actually was named by loggers from West Virginia, who were reminded of the Mingo Falls in their home state. The Cherokees, however, had long dubbed it Big Bear Falls, despite its being fed by Mingo Creek. To avoid the abundant crowds at this popular sightseeing destination, try heading out early in the morning. Soco Falls – A short drive from Cherokee is this magnificent and rare double waterfall, featuring a 120-foot cascade and stunning views during any season. Horseback Riding – Located at the foot of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is Smokemont Riding Stables which offers a safe, fun, family friendly horseback riding experience. Our natural riding trails feature beautiful, wooded scenery, native flora and fauna, and mountain streams and waterfalls. Experience the best of the Smokies year-round with guided tours from Smokemont. Jackson County is only minutes from two amazingly beautiful and free National Park sites. With affordable lodging, it makes the perfect base camp for your adventures! We are more remote and less crowded than the Tennessee side of the Smokies so you can enjoy trails all to yourself. The 470-mile linear parkway, of which Jackson County borders some 45 miles, connects Shenandoah National Park in Virginia with Western North Carolina’s Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Construction began in 1935 at Cumberland Knob near the NC/VA state line; the final link was finished 52 years later when the Linn Cove Viaduct opened in 1987. The parkway is open year-round except when closed to vehicle traffic due to inclement weather. There are plenty of Jackson County overlooks worth a stop on the Parkway, starting with the Richland Balsam Overlook ( Mile 431.4 ), the highest point at 6,047 feet above sea level. Other Jackson County overlooks include: Mile 427.6: Bear Pen Gap. While there’s not much of a view, visitors can take a 2.5-mile round trip hike to scenic Wet Camp Gap, a high-elevation grassy area with long-range views. It’s perfect for camping and berry-picking. Mile 443.1: Balsam Gap. Parkway Entrance: At the US 74-23 Crossover. East 7 mi. to Waynesville, west 12 mi. to Sylva. Mile 451.2: Waterrock Knob Parking Overlook. Has a visitor information center, and comfort station. The overlook offers a four-state view including a fine panorama of the Great Smoky Mountains. A short trail, with pedestrian overlooks, leads to the top of the knob. Blue Ridge Parkway

Mile 455.7: Soco Gap. Parkway Entrance: At the US 19 Crossover. 12 miles west to Cherokee, 5 miles east to Maggie Valley. Great Smoky Mountains National Park The Great Smoky Mountains National Park’s entrance, located in Cherokee, NC, lets you access the 520,000-acre national park that straddles the North Carolina/Tennessee border. Created in 1934 and opened in 1940, the park has a new visitor center on the North Carolina side, located at 1194 Newfound Gap Road, Cherokee, NC 28719 (2 miles north of Cherokee on U.S. 441). Museum exhibits at the Oconaluftee Visitor Center tell the story of life in these mountains from the Native Americans and early European settlement time periods through the Civilian Conservation Corp and the development of the national park. The adjacent Mountain Farm Museum contains a fascinating collection of log structures including a farmhouse, barn, smokehouse, apple house, corn cribs and others. Demonstrations of farm life are conducted seasonally. Variations in elevation, rainfall, temperature, and geology provide ideal habitats for over 1,600 species of flowering plants, including over 200 native tree and shrub species. The park also boasts a diverse wildlife. Protected in the park are some 65 species of mammals, over 200 varieties of birds, 67 native fish species, and more than 80 types of reptiles and amphibians. This includes an estimated 1,500 black bears and a small herd of elk. Fishing is allowed in the 1,073 miles of fish-bearing streams with a North Carolina or Tennessee fishing license.
